The Community Engagement Internship enables Penn undergraduate students an opportunity to engage in work for the common good while also acquiring meaningful real-world experiences with nonprofit community organizations through an internship experience. Through the Community Engagement Internship, Civic House strives to create deep, reciprocal relationships with community organizations that help to build capacity and provide rich and meaningful experiences for our students.
The Community Engagement Internship provides funding to Penn undergraduate students to support academic year-long internships at our selected community partner organizations. At our community partner organizations, Penn students engage in a meaningful social justice work, learn more about the city of Philadelphia, acquire real-world skills, and develop and grow through a mentorship relationship with a supervisor.
At Civic House, Penn students explore aspects of identity, the root causes of social justice work, and engage in reflection to develop critical consciousness with a cohort of interns.
Once a student has accepted an internship, they will be expected to:
- Work 10 hours a week throughout the academic year (fall/spring) at their assigned nonprofit organization (or 35 hours a week for summer interns)
- Attend weekly training, education, and reflection meetings at Civic House
- Attend an individual check-ins with Civic House staff
- Complete an end-of-internship reflection/evaluation
- Plan Public Interest Career workshops in collaboration with Civic House staff
Students participating in the program for the academic year will be paid weekly $12/hr.
**Please note that students who are eligible for academic year work study funding and/or demonstrate financial need will be prioritized.**
Please submit a resume, a screenshot of your financial aid package, and complete the application via Handshake by searching the organization’s name.
